Julie Asked.......

How do I decorate a small room?

Decorating is about self expression so there are no right answers to this question, but here are some guidelines....

1.  You do not have to paint a small room a light color, in fact there are some fantastic small, dark, dramatic rooms.

2.  Pick a concise color palette and go with it.  Don't be shy, commit to the color.  If you are choosing a busy wallpaper or fabric, keep the other elements, furniture, fabrics and accessories on the quiet side.

3.  Small rooms do not need small furniture, in fact a small rooms need just a few stand out large pieces of furniture.

4.  Edit, edit, edit.   Decide what the room is for and pick pieces that will be able to function or even multi function.  Whether it be storage, dining or lounging, really think about every piece and what it will bring to the room.  Function over form in this situation.  You do not have the luxury of space so every piece must count and of course, keep the clutter to a minimum.

5.  Consider the wall space and ceiling space as well.  Bookcases or credenzas are a fabulous way of condensing the clutter on one wall so you are able to keep things off the tables.  Consider wall sconces or ceiling pendants instead of multiple lamps to light the room.

Hope this helps, good luck!
