The Most Unappreciated Flower
My absolute favorite flower for Valentine's Day....not roses, carnations! I love how full they look all mounded together and how lacy the edges are. The key is to buy them in one color and cut the stems down almost in half. They are not like long stem roses, they are not meant to fan out in a vase. Keep the arrangement tight but leave enough room on the stem to trim them down every couple of days.
Extra bonus: They last at least 2-2 1/2 weeks, much longer than roses and they're CHEAP!
Tip: I only buy carnations that are two-tone in color. If you really like to mix, you can get pink carnations with a red trim and mix them with solid pink. Never mix solid pink, red and white together in one vase. If you're lucky enough to get carnations for Valentine's Day and they are a mixed bouquet, separate the flowers into smaller, solid color bouquets!
