One of my favorite things to do is read to the boys. Thankfully, two of my three boys love books I've managed to engage the third in the first Harry Potter book which I've been reading to him this summer. The following are our favorite picks from this summer!
I love the Three Little Pigs because the message is to take your time and do things right the first time. Rainbow Rob is about a Penguin who has a dream about being different but in the end decides that being himself is the best answer! All kids love Brown Bear, I think they love the repetitive rhyme and the beautiful illustrations. Dr. Seuss's There's a Wockey in my Pocket is a family favorite because it makes the kids laugh every time and it's just as fun for me to read it.
These books are great for older kids. The world of Harry Potter is such an amazing, magical place and I'm so thankful for the imagination of J.K. Rowling and other talented authors that have the ability to draw kids in who may not otherwise be readers. As you know, I have three boys so I'm not in the know about literature for young girls. Thankfully, I am a girl and remember reading countless Judy Blume books. It's amazing how these books still stay relevant after all these years. At our house we love The Cat and the Hat's Learning Library. There's a book about everything from space and dinosaurs to the human body. Older kids love it because they're learning something new and its still in the creative Dr. Seuss rhyming style. Also so fun for me to read!
These are great back to school choices. Miss Nelson is Missing was my favorite as a little girl. I still love the story, message and the water color illustrations. Dude That's Rude and Bullies are a Pain the the Brain are great because they teach the message that parents want their kids to learn but they do it using "teenage" terminology so they think its "cool" to be polite and not be a bully. It also came in handy last year when we were teaching Jake how to deal with a bully. Alexander the the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is hysterical. Oh the trials and tribulations of a young man! I think even the kids realize how silly it sounds when they complain!
I like Myself is a silly tale of a little girl who loves herself no matter what she looks like or what people think of her! Is There Really A Human Race is a great book by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornwall. The message is for everyone to slow down, stop racing and help each other and the world will be a better place. My boys love the Family Huddle. It is a football story by the Manning family (Archie, Peyton, Eli and Cooper), but it's also how to work with your siblings and how your family always needs to stick together.
I always try to buy the boys' one nice hardcover book for their birthdays. I have selected two of the three for this year. Big Plans is for my 5 year old because he is a dreamer and I want to encourage that he can do anything he wants to in life. Baby Boss is a hilarious story of a baby in a walker and a business suit who runs the house like a board room! I can't wait to give it to AJ and read it to the boys.
Happy Reading!
